I quickly learned after my first child was born that much of the cutesy stuff hanging in the closet would hardly get touched. It seemed like between changes and messes and drooling my son lived in onesies until it was time to go outside. Most of the clothes were never worn because he grew out of them so fast. Now 9 years later I am happy that his school has a simple dress code. It helps take the guess work out of what we need. I simply buy what we need for a little over a week, because we rarely go over one week for doing laundry. After having three children clothes can get a little pricey so this guideline has helped us keep clothing under control. Of course we throw in a couple of extra fun outfits and the grandparents and aunts tend to send extras as well but by keeping the clothing we buy to a minimum we really cut out the clutter.
What about you? Do you keep tabs on how much clothing the kids have or do you go all out?

From the time my son was born, I have always been good about making sure he looked extra cute. However, I agree that clothing can get costly, especially when you’re changing outfits several times a day. To strike a balance, I watch the sales closely. I always make sure to spend about $5 or less for a shirt and about $8-10 for pants/shorts…no matter how “nice” they are. That way he always has nice clothes to wear, but I don’t have to stress out when he ruins an outfit rolling in the grass or playing with paint.
the looking cute thing didn’t last long in this house…although i did have a little spurt after my daughter was born until the novelty of all the dresses and frills wore off. besides, babies look cute in anything!
we’ve gone through a few phases of needing more clothes….potty training = more pants…. i had a heavy drooler so he needed a good stock of shirts until almost 2… but we still try to keep it down to what we need (and always welcome cute gifts from grandma!) but kids clothing is just too darned expensive.
I fail miserably at this. My daughter has had more clothes in her 2 1/2 years of life than I’ve probably had in my entire 37 years. I don’t ever pay full price for anything, and somehow manage to convince myself that the $2 shirt and $4 skirt are must haves. She already has clothes in sizes 5 & 6 because I can’t seem to pass up the deals. I’ve learned that the only solution is to avoid the stores completely. It’s sad really…girl stuff is just too cute!!
