Are you one of those people who have little containers flying out at you when you open a cabinet door? I know you’re out there but don’t fret because I have a few tips to help you get your food storage containers under control.
1. Gather all of your containers and get them into one location so you can see what you have.
2. Match each container with its respective lid. If you have lids or containers without mates, toss or recycle them!
3. Did you just realize you have 50 containers? You might want to purge some. Keep a realistic amount.
4. Perhaps you didn’t have 50 but you noticed a few containers you don’t like or don’t use. Purge them!
5. Now, take a look at your collection and your storage options and see what will work best for you. Here are 3 ways to think about storing these containers.
- Stack like-sized containers inside each other with the lids stacked nice and neat in front of the container.
- Keep lids on containers and stack them on top of each other. (You must be blessed with ample storage space for this to work.)
- Nest your containers and store the lids vertically by size next to the containers. (This works best if you have a container to store your lids in. I know, I know: you’re thinking a container for your container lids?!)
And, last but not least, if you are using the cheap stuff for everyday use, you might want to think about upgrading because some of the new containers have been designed to make storage easier.

great ideas….i particularly like the product link with the lids that snap to the bottom. my containers are tidy, but my lids are a mess.
next step: to start actually USING some of them instead of ‘chip-clipping’ bags of rice and lentils, shoving them in the cupboard and hoping for the best!
STRAWS………..very unpredictable…who wud hav known!!!..lLOL
After several tries at keeping a functional storage place in my cupboard, I finally found what works for me! I recently switched to glass for health reasons, and either tossed the old or use it for kids lunches, in case it doesn’t come back home. I keep all containers with their lids on and stack them according to size. Everything is now at my fingertips, no searching for the right lids or having to move a stack to get to the one I need, inevitably it was in the middle. It’s so much better now, and quit pretty to look at.
After sorting and deciding which ones you use the most… get rid of all the odd sizes and minimize the types of containers…. as in the photo above.. if you have only 2 or 3 types/sizes they stack much easier in your cupboard and the fridge…
kind of like socks, if you buy lots of one style/colour.. way easier to match and manage! Thanks for the other tips!
I was just getting annoyed at my container drawer yesterday, couldn’t find matching lids! I’m going to sort through tomorrow…enough is enough!
I have a special wire basket that I bought to organize my container lids. It is a generic cupboard organizer, but has different sized “compartments” for the different lids. This way I can organize round lids in one, square in another etc. Unfortunately, my 18 month old seems to like to disrupt the process on a daily basis!
Thanks for the great post! You have a new fan.
