Reading to your small people

I’ve never been an avid reader. I like travel books, biographies, business books, magazines (do they count?!), so when I started to read to my daughter, frankly – I didn’t know what to read! I didn’t know what to buy, where to get it… the library had TOO many choices!

Recently one of my genius neighbour friends, Krista, had a great idea. For our quarterly Thursday night gab-fest, we all brought our favourite children’s books. We went in a circle talking about why we loved them. It was amazing. Krista documented each book and sent out a list. I thought I would share it with you! Even if you are a good little reader, there may be some new & highly recommended books on the list. Enjoy!

The Kissing Hand – Audrey Penn (separation, missing mommy/baby)
Peekaboo Kisses – Barney Saltberg (just for fun! Cute images, tactile)
Waner Don’t Forget – Lynn Seligman & Geraldine Mabin (funny funny book)
Paperbag Princess – Robert Munsch (girl power!)
How Dinosaurs Eat Their Food – Jane Yolen & Mark Teague (just for fun)
A Drop of Gold – Vlastavan Kampen (fun and artful)
Isla (Sequel to Abuela) – Arthur Dorros (great if you have overseas family)
I Love you The Purplest – Barbara Joosse (great when new sibling arrives)
The Quilt Makers Gift – Jeff Brumbeau (generosity, kindness, beautifully artful)
Arnie the Doughnut – Laurie Keller (just for fun!)
My Special Day – June Goldsborough (fanstastic day about big girl independence)
The Magic Friend Maker – Gladys Baker Bond (classic book about making new friends)
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs – Judi Barrett (fun!)
The Giving Tree – Shel Silverstein (unconditional love, mother love)
The Rohald Dahl Collection (hilarious for big kids)
Samuel’s Most Important Message – Frank Glew (be good to your environment)
Papa, Do You Love Me? – Barbara Joosse (father’s love)
Click, Clack, Moo – Cows that Type – Doreen Cronin (just for fun!)
The Borrowers – Mary Norton (amazing book for imaginative big kids)
One Fish, Two Fish, Blue Fish, Red Fish – Dr. Seuss (fun!)
Effie the Ant – Beverley Allinson (differences are OK)
Jillian Jiggs – Phoebe Gillman (fun!)
10 Conversations You Need to Have With Your Children – Shmuley (for parents)
Gurgle, Bubble, Splash – Richard Thompson (amazing: fun, imaginative)
Daddy Kisses, Mommy Hugs – Anne Gutman (classic for little ones)

New Icons?

Hey Mabelheads,

Maybe it’s because of summer camp season, but we seem to be getting more and more requests for icons that older kids would like. What exactly is that? That may seem like a silly question, but our kids are all small – we don’t live in ‘big kid’ world yet! If you have any great icon ideas, we’d love to hear them! email icons@mabel.ca and we’ll keep track of all requests. Hopefully we’ll come up with some great ones!

VOTED Best Label Company!

We just received word that we have been voted the Best Label Company by Toronto City Parent readers. This is fabulous! City Parent readers have been loyal Mabelheads from day one. More flattering is the number of people that take the time to nominate us and participate in these surveys! We are told it was a landslide victory, which is just the cherry on top!

Mabel’s Labels has been a word of mouth wonder from the beginning. We are still amazed at how word spreads, moms share, and moms listen. Thank you to all the women out there sharing your Mabel love with your friends & family!

Powerhouse Indeed!

June 1st, 2007
Written by: Julie Cole

The biggest lesson I learned from lunch with Victoria is that I need to ‘staff up’!

I asked how she could manage all those kids and run a business. I’ve got a ‘mere’ five kids and can’t figure out how someone could do it with eight! Well, she quickly stated that she has three full time staff….a nanny, a housekeeper, and a laundry person. Then it all made sense. So if anyone is looking for a birthday gift for me, forget the ipod, I’ll take some staff!
